A Day in Mahone Bay: Scarecrows and Coffee

Mahone Bay

Every year we go to Nova Scotia to visit our family. When my kids were smaller we would go at various times of the year, but since they are in school, we now go at the end of their school year to kick off their summer break.

The one sad part about going in the summer is we don’t get to visit Nova Scotia and see the beautiful fall colors… or take part in the Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival & Antique Fair.

The Scarecrow Festival and Antique Fair is one of Nova Scotia’s most unique family festivals. Taking place over the last weekend in September you can see over 250 handmade scarecrows, a candlelit pumpkin path, children’s events and live entertainment, and a huge antique fair. This festival is going on for over 23 years and is completely free! They even have a detailed map of all the activities so you don’t miss out on anything.

There is plenty of things to do too. There is live entertainment on Saturday and Sunday and arts and crafts activities at Tummy To Mummy Kids Shop, The Mahone Bay Museum and the Calvary Crossroads Church.

Can’t get there this weekend, don’t worry the scarecrows are on display for 2 weeks weather depending.

While your in Mahone Bay take the opportunity to see the beautiful sights and check out some of the local restaurants and shops.

Mahone Bay MUST SEE: The Barn

If you are checking out the Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival, make sure you check out The Barn Coffeehouse! At first when you look from the outside it looks cute but nothing that stands out as a place to get a good chai tea or latte.

When you go in you will usually find one of the owners (Mike and Amanda) working behind the counter. Opened in 2017 they have a wide selection of hot and cold beverages as well as lots of tasty food.

I would highly suggest you try any of their soups which are chalked full of local veggies and fresh herbs. It also helps that you can get it by either the cup or bowl and comes with a fresh baked buttery bun too!

At first when you enter you are surprised at how open and airy it is.

Even if your there on a busy day, check out the upstairs eating area that is full of fun artifacts and memorabilia.

Wandering around to see the scarecrows with a coffee and lunch at the barn really is a perfect way to spend a day!

Don’t forget to pose with the Barns scarecrow and share your photo with #mahonebay and #scarecrowfestival2019.
